IP Phone Maker - Study Points to Declining Cordless Phone Market in Era of IP Phone Growth

January 11, 2010

As IP phones gain traction in consumer and business markets, it’s no secret the worldwide market for cordless phones – those with portable handsets linked by radio to fixed-line base units – is declining. And now, new data from ABI Research (News - Alert) has confirmed it.

According to ABI Research’s recently released “Evolution of the Cordless Phone“ report, the total cordless phone market size in 2014 will be about 17 percent -- nearly $1 billion -- smaller than it is today. However new digital models with broadband-friendly functionality are providing some rearguard relief.

“The decline in the cordless phone market is indicative of a larger story,” said practice director Jason Blackwell, adding that 95 percent of all cordless phones are used in homes, not businesses. “And in many developing regions, telcos and users are jumping straight to mobile networks without ever deploying fixed-line infrastructure.”

But while consumers might be saying goodbye to cordless, 2010 looks to be the year they’ll say yes to video, if you ask Yealink (News - Alert), an IP phone maker based out of Xiamen, China.

In November, the company unveiled its VP-2009 IP Video Phone, the latest model to join the roster of VoIP phones put out by Yealink. The phone allows consumers and small- to medium-size businesses to harness the power and cost-effectiveness of Voice-Video-over-Internet-Protocol to make free video calls worldwide.

The seven-inch touchscreen format is sleek and gives users an easy launching pad to make quick video calls from their work spaces. With the video interface, employers can remain in visual contact with their employees in remote office locations.

“Yealink VP-2009 allows people easily and economically stay in close face-to-face contact with family and friends,” said David Chen, president of Yealink. “But while one can see the many benefits of the multi-video phone, the phone’s price is the key point in the availability for common users. Yealink VP-2009 brings an affordable visual communication, and can compete well with other manufacturers.”

Yealink will be showcasing the phone next week in Miami at TMCnet’s annual ITEXPO East, held Jan. 20-22, in booth #407.
