Modern Desk Phones Still Play an Important Role in Business

February 18, 2014

There’s a lot of talk about mobility and moving beyond the office. I should know; I write many of the stories that highlight the trend.

But it also is true that the majority of employees still work in the office most of the time, and even those who are mobile will still work from an office some of the time. I myself work from the road, but I’m writing this article with a trusty SIP-enabled desk phone to the left of my laptop screen.

The office phone still plays a role—a big role. It is the centerpiece when in the office, right up there with the computer screen, and it affords the ability to more easily connect with colleagues than pulling a smartphone out of a pocket and booting up an app.

Filling that need is what the Yealink SIP-T48G VoIP Phone (News - Alert) is all about, a new offering just announced by the handset giant.

The T48G features HD voice, dual-port gigabit Ethernet with PoE, supports six SIP accounts with rapid call handling, has EHS support and wireless headset support with the optional Yealink BT40 Bluetooth dongle. It also is compatibility with 3CX, Asterisk (News - Alert), and BroadSoft BroadWorks Phone Systems, and is expandable via its six Yealink EXP40 Expansion Modules.

The phone just looks cool, too, as a recent video from the floor of ITEXPO (News - Alert) shows. The phone has smartphone-esque stylings, along with a large, 7-inch color touchscreen that has virtual DSS buttons for quick calling. During the video from the floor of ITEXPO, Yealink’s Wei Tang (News - Alert) showed how these buttons could not only pull up contacts fast, but also show a status message from the person being called—a feature that definitely brings chat functionality to the desk phone.

But desk phones such as the T48G are not just about mimicking smartphones and chat services. They also play an important role in the ecosystem of the mobile professional. As Tang noted in a separate TMCnet interview during the show, phones such as the T48G bring elements that cell phones have a hard time matching—such as HD voice.

“On the one hand you want a mobility option, but on the other hand you want high quality when you need it,” Tang told us. “So what Yealink (News - Alert) is trying to do is bring up the high quality UC system.”

On that issue he definitely has a point.

“Tablets are easy to get these days, but we really strive for quality,” Tang said in the interview. “You want to have a product on your desktop that’s reliable and also with a high-quality voice.”

So while there is no doubt that cell phones are playing an increasingly important role in business, the office phone still plays a role—a large role.
